Stack earns its place in the Blender extensions library by bringing familiar layer-stacking behaviour into a single Shader Editor node, with a version 1.0.4 persistence overhaul so nodes survive save and reload.
Stack adds a single node to Blender's Shader Editor for layering and blending textures. It works much like layer stacking in Photoshop or composite maps in other 3D tools, giving each layer its own blend mode, opacity, and mask input. You can add as many layers as you need, then connect the node's Color output to your material.
The node offers a set of blend modes: Normal, Multiply, Add, Subtract, Screen, Overlay, Soft Light, Difference, Darken, and Lighten. Per-layer opacity controls the strength of each layer, and any texture can be plugged in as a per-layer mask. Layers can be collapsed to keep the UI compact, reordered up and down the stack, and renamed with descriptive names. Editing layers is non-destructive, preserving your connections and values.
To use it, open the Shader Editor and choose Add → Custom → Stack, then connect the Color output to your material. Version 1.0.4 introduced a persistence overhaul so Stack nodes round-trip cleanly through save and reload, with layer data now stored directly on the node.
Stack is best for blender artists who want to layer and blend textures with blend modes, opacity, and masking inside the Shader Editor.
Stack is completely free to download and use.
Stack requires Blender 4.5.0 or later, and is listed as compatible with Blender 4.5 LTS and newer. You will need a supported version of Blender installed before adding the node. Once installed, open the Shader Editor and choose Add → Custom → Stack to place the node, then connect its Color output to your material. From there you can add layers, set blend modes, adjust opacity, and connect textures as needed.
Stack works inside Blender's Shader Editor. Open the Shader Editor, then choose Add → Custom → Stack to place the node. Connect the Color output to your material, and from there you can add layers, set per-layer blend modes, adjust opacity, and plug in textures. You can install the extension by dragging and dropping it into Blender, or by downloading it and using Install from Disk through Blender's extension preferences.
Stack version 1.0.4 introduced a persistence overhaul so Stack nodes round-trip cleanly through save and reload. Layer data, the internal mix chain, input sockets, and external links all survive a file close and reopen. Layer data is now stored directly on the node as a CollectionProperty. Files saved with version 1.0.3 should load in 1.0.4 without issue, but files saved with earlier test builds of 1.0.4 where sockets were lost cannot be recovered — delete the affected Stack nodes and add them fresh.
Stack is listed as free in this catalog. It is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, and the extension does not require special permissions. For current licensing details, source code, and to report issues, refer to the developer's page on GitHub. Because it is distributed under the GPL, you can review and work with the code according to that license's terms.
