Why we like it

Preselect earns its place in the superhive library as a companion to Random Flow, giving greeble and randomized-mesh workflows a set of hotkey face-selection commands that run through an object-mode overlay. It's compatible with Blender 4.0 to 4.5 and distributed as a GPL-licensed add-on.

What is Preselect?

Preselect is a support tool for the Random Flow add-on in Blender, made to speed up selecting large areas of faces in both object and edit mode so they can be used immediately for generating randomized meshes. While built primarily for Random Flow, its selection functionality also works outside of it, for example when quickly extruding those areas instead.

The add-on adds several hotkey-driven selection commands. Linked Flat Faces (Shift F) selects the face under the cursor and connected faces, delimited by a sharpness threshold. Linked (Ctrl Shift F) selects entire face islands using boundary or terminator edges. Select Similar Coplanar (Ctrl Alt Shift F) uses the planar height of the face under the cursor to select all faces sharing the same plane. Deselect All and Select All clear or select every face without needing face detection.

Preselect operates through a simple drawing overlay that displays in object mode, showing blue for selected faces and red for deselected ones. This lets you layer randomization with Random Flow while staying entirely in object mode. All updates are provided free of charge.

Who is Preselect best for?

Preselect is best for blender artists using Random Flow who need to select large face areas quickly for randomized mesh generation, plus anyone wanting fast hotkey-based face selection through an object-mode overlay.

How much does Preselect cost?

Preselect is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Linked Flat Faces (Shift F) selects the face under the cursor and all connected faces, delimited by a sharpness threshold
  • Linked (Ctrl Shift F) selects entire face islands, delimited by boundary or terminator edges
  • Select Similar Coplanar (Ctrl Alt Shift F) selects all faces sharing the same plane as the face under the cursor, based on planar height
  • Deselect All (Ctrl Shift A) and Select All (Ctrl Alt Shift A) clear or select all faces without requiring face detection
  • Drawing overlay in object mode showing blue for selected faces and red for deselected faces
  • Selection commands usable with Random Flow or on their own, such as for extruding selected areas

Frequently asked questions

What Blender versions does Preselect support?

Preselect supports Blender versions 4.0 through 4.5 and is listed as Blender Extension compatible, so it fits into current Blender releases. It's distributed as an add-on under the GPL license. Beyond version compatibility, Blender Guppy provides online documentation and a YouTube tutorial, both linked on the developer's page, if you want to confirm setup details or see the selection commands before installing it into your own scenes.

What hotkeys does Preselect use for selecting faces?

Preselect maps its selection commands to hotkeys. Shift F triggers Linked Flat Faces, selecting the face under the cursor and connected faces within a sharpness threshold. Ctrl Shift F runs Linked to grab entire face islands using boundary or terminator edges. Ctrl Alt Shift F is Select Similar Coplanar, selecting faces sharing the same plane. Ctrl Shift A deselects all faces, and Ctrl Alt Shift A selects all faces, with those last two needing no face detection.

Does Preselect only work with the Random Flow add-on?

Preselect is built primarily as a support tool for the Random Flow add-on, letting you select large face areas and pass them into randomized mesh generation. Its selection functionality also works outside of Random Flow, however. You can use the same commands for other tasks, such as quickly extruding the selected areas instead. The add-on works through a drawing overlay that displays in object mode, marking selected faces in blue and deselected faces in red.

Is Preselect free to use?

Preselect is listed as free in this catalog. Blender Guppy notes that updates are provided at no extra cost, and owners are emailed and can download new versions from their product library. For current licensing and any purchase terms, check the developer's page directly, since details can change over time. Preselect is distributed under the GPL license as a Blender add-on.
