Why we like it

Stands out in the blender_extensions library for handling Quill's native authoring format directly in both directions. Worth noting: artwork using Quill's Ribbon brush appears bloated on import, because Grease Pencil behaves like a billboard that always faces the viewer and ignores brush orientation. The Cylinder brush, with its quasi-radial symmetry, is the only visually compatible one.

What is Quill Import/Export?

Quill Import/Export connects Blender with Quill, a VR illustration and animation tool. The add-on reads and writes Quill's native authoring files, the .json and .qbin format, rather than the compressed .imm files. Import and export are accessed from File > Import > Quill scene and File > Export > Quill scene, and both dialogs place their options on the right-hand side.

On import, it brings the Quill layer hierarchy into Blender objects: groups become Empties with transform and children, paint layers become Mesh or Grease Pencil objects, cameras become Camera objects, and image layers become Image objects. Frame-by-frame animation imports as Mesh sequences or Grease Pencil frames, alongside transform keyframes.

On export, the Blender scene goes back to Quill layers. Grease Pencil objects become paint layers, Mesh objects become painted wireframes, Armatures become painted stick figures, cameras map to cameras, image references become image layers, and Empties become Quill groups. Transform keyframes on groups and objects, plus Grease Pencil frame-by-frame animation, carry across to Quill as well.

Who is Quill Import/Export best for?

Quill Import/Export is best for blender artists working with Quill VR illustrations and animations who need to move scenes between the two tools.

How much does Quill Import/Export cost?

Quill Import/Export is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Reads and writes Quill's native authoring files (.json and .qbin), not the compressed .imm files
  • Imports the Quill layer hierarchy: groups to Empties, paint layers to Mesh or Grease Pencil, cameras to Camera objects, image layers to Image objects
  • Exports Blender objects to Quill layers: Grease Pencil to paint layers, Mesh to painted wireframes, Armatures to painted stick figures, Empties to Quill groups
  • Imports frame-by-frame animation as Mesh sequences or Grease Pencil frames, plus transform keyframes
  • Exports transform keyframes and Grease Pencil frame-by-frame animation back to Quill
  • Version 1.6.0 imports lipsync data from Papagayo/Moho .dat format, sound data, and viewpoint thumbnail pictures
  • Import and export dialogs include options panels for adjusting settings before running

Frequently asked questions

Does Quill Import/Export work with Blender 4.2?

Quill Import/Export supports Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so recent Blender releases can run it. The add-on requests file permissions to import and export Quill projects from and to disk. Version 1.6.0 also includes a fix for exporting Grease Pencil in Blender 5.10, so newer builds are covered on that front. If you're on a Blender version below 4.2, check the developer's GitHub page for other releases and compatibility notes before installing.

What Quill file formats does Quill Import/Export read and write?

Quill Import/Export reads and writes Quill's native authoring files, specifically the .json and .qbin formats. It does not handle the compressed .imm files. When importing, you point it at a file inside the Quill scene folder, such as Quill.json, and the add-on reconstructs the layer hierarchy in Blender. On export, it uses the file name you give to create the scene folder. This native-format approach keeps both import and export within Quill's own authoring structure rather than a compressed distribution format.

How do I import and export a Quill scene in Blender?

Quill Import/Export adds entries under File > Import > Quill scene and File > Export > Quill scene. To import, select a file inside the Quill scene folder, for example Quill.json; large scenes may take a while to process. To export, the add-on uses the file name to create the scene folder. Both the import and export dialogs place their options on the right-hand side, so you can adjust settings before running the operation. The add-on installs by dragging it into Blender or from disk.

Why does my Quill Ribbon brush artwork look bloated after importing?

Quill Import/Export warns that artwork using Quill's Ribbon brush looks completely bloated when imported. This happens because Grease Pencil behaves like a billboard that always faces the viewer, so it does not respect the orientation of the Ribbon or of any other Quill brush. Because of this, the Cylinder brush, with its quasi-radial symmetry, is the only visually compatible brush. If your Quill piece relies heavily on the Ribbon brush, expect the imported result to differ from the original.

Is Quill Import/Export free, and what license does it use?

Quill Import/Export is listed as free in this catalog and is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. That license governs how you can use, modify, and redistribute the add-on. For the current terms, source code, and any licensing details, the developer's GitHub page is the place to check, since project distribution can change over time. The extension requests file permissions so it can read and write Quill projects from and to disk.
