Why we like it

Retro Console Lite is the free edition of the Retro Console add-on; the developer notes additional features in the full version on their marketplace page.

What is Retro Console Lite?

Retro Console Lite is a Blender add-on that transforms existing image textures into an authentic Game Boy Color look. It reduces textures to a 64x64 pixel resolution with 4 colors per channel, applies Floyd-Steinberg dithering for smooth gradients, and recreates the saturated color palette characteristic of the GBC. Conversion runs from the sidebar panel with a single click, and the add-on automatically handles material node setup, texture resizing, palette reduction, dithering, and color saturation.

Processing is numpy-based and supports batch conversion of multiple materials at once. An automatic backup system preserves your original textures, and a reset function restores them; Ctrl+Z also works. The add-on works with existing materials and requires no complex node setup, operating on image textures rather than procedural materials.

Retro Console Lite works with both Cycles and Eevee, automatically setting interpolation to "Closest" for pixel-perfect results and Specular to 0. Output is delivered as 64x64 packed Blender images ready for use. This is the Lite edition; more features are available in the full version on the developer's marketplace page.

Who is Retro Console Lite best for?

Retro Console Lite is best for indie game developers making retro games, Game Boy Color art enthusiasts, low-poly modeling projects, nostalgic art styles, and educational projects about handheld gaming history.

How much does Retro Console Lite cost?

Retro Console Lite is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Retro Console Lite work with Cycles and Eevee?

Retro Console Lite works with both Cycles and Eevee. The add-on automatically sets texture interpolation to "Closest" for pixel-perfect results, and it also sets Specular to 0 for the authentic retro look. Output is delivered as 64x64 packed Blender images ready for use. It operates on existing materials with image textures, so no complex node setup is needed before you run a conversion in either render engine.

Why aren't my textures converting with Retro Console Lite?

Retro Console Lite requires your materials to have Image Texture nodes with loaded images. Procedural materials will not convert, and the add-on does not support animation or video textures. It works best with diffuse or albedo textures, and proper UV mapping helps produce better results. If a material lacks a loaded image texture, the conversion cannot process it, so check that each material references an actual image file before running the add-on.

Can I undo a conversion in Retro Console Lite?

Retro Console Lite includes an automatic backup system that preserves your original textures rather than modifying them. To revert, use the "RESET TO ORIGINAL" button, or press Ctrl+Z. Because the add-on creates backups automatically, your source textures stay intact throughout the process. Even so, backing up your project before conversion is a sensible precaution, though the built-in restoration functions are designed to return your textures to their original state.

What Blender version does Retro Console Lite require?

Retro Console Lite is compatible with Blender 4.4.3 and later versions. Its only dependency is NumPy, which is included with Blender, so no additional installation is required. To set it up, install the add-on through Preferences > Add-ons, select objects with textured materials, open the sidebar panel under View3D > Sidebar > Retro Console, and click "CONVERT TO GAME BOY COLOR" to process your textures.

Is Retro Console Lite free, and can I use it commercially?

Retro Console Lite is listed as free here and is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later; check the developer's page for current licensing details. The add-on and its output can be used in commercial projects. Note that Game Boy Color is a trademark of Nintendo. A full version with more features is available separately on the developer's marketplace page.
