Why we like it

Retargify pairs Rigify's familiar workflow with a non-destructive setup, so you keep original armature data and engine compatibility while gaining full control during rigging. Worth noting: it does not currently work past Blender 4.4, with updates said to be coming.

What is Retargify?

Retargify is a Blender plugin from Haggets that overhauls Rigify, adding quality-of-life improvements to make rig setup faster and the animation process easier. It remains Rigify at its core, so existing Rigify tutorials and knowledge still apply without major changes to the overall process.

The plugin works non-destructively through armature duplicates and constraints that are created automatically, giving you full control over the armature while keeping the original data intact. You can add, move, and remove bones, and armatures can be updated without losing animation data. Baking transfers animations from the animation armature to the base armature in a single click with 1:1 accuracy, and backwards baking lets you bake motion-captured data onto the Rigify armature to tweak it with Rigify controls.

Quick tools include bone collection presets you can save, reuse, and share, automatic sorting of bones into collections by Rigify bone type, and automatic bone coloring for readability. Note that Retargify does not currently work past Blender 4.4, with updates said to be coming.

Who is Retargify best for?

Retargify is best for animators and riggers working with game armatures who want Rigify's controls while keeping the armature's structure and compatibility with game engines and other software.

How much does Retargify cost?

Retargify is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Non-destructive workflow using automatically created armature duplicates and constraints, keeping the original armature data intact while you add, move, and remove bones
  • One-click baking to transfer animations from the animation armature to the base armature with 1:1 accuracy, with control over which animations to bake
  • Backwards baking of motion-captured data onto the Rigify armature, so you can tweak it with Rigify controls
  • Bone collection presets you can save, reuse, and share, plus automatic sorting of bones into collections by Rigify bone type
  • Automatic bone coloring based on bone type for better readability, with common parameters organized in a single place
  • Quick bake and export to FBX
  • Armature updating system that keeps animation data between updates, and a single toggle to leave the setup stage or disable the animation armature constraints

Frequently asked questions

Does Retargify work with Blender 4.5 or later?

Retargify does not currently work past Blender 4.4, according to the developer, who notes that updates are coming. If you're running Blender 4.4 or earlier, the plugin functions as described, overhauling Rigify with its non-destructive workflow and baking tools. For newer Blender releases, check the developer's page for the latest status before installing, since compatibility with versions beyond 4.4 has not yet been confirmed here.

Is Retargify free to use?

Retargify is listed as free here in the catalog. Pricing and licensing can change over time, so for the current terms it's best to check the developer's page directly. What you get is a plugin that overhauls Rigify with a non-destructive workflow, one-click baking between the animation and base armatures, backwards baking for motion-captured data, and quick tools like bone collection presets and automatic bone sorting.

Can Retargify bake motion capture onto a Rigify armature?

Retargify supports backwards baking, which lets you bake motion-captured data or similar directly onto the Rigify armature. From there you can tweak the animation using Rigify's advanced controls, and paired with custom names you could share animations between different armatures. This complements the standard baking direction, which transfers animations from the animation armature to the base armature in a single click with 1:1 accuracy, giving you control over which animations to bake.

Do I need to learn a new rigging system to use Retargify?

Retargify is still Rigify at its core, with many quality-of-life additions and some features re-organized for efficiency. Because of that, existing Rigify tutorials and knowledge still apply without major changes to the overall process. It focuses on streamlining setup, giving you complete control over the armature during the setup stage, and organizing common parameters in a single place. A single toggle also lets you switch out of the setup stage or disable the animation armature constraints.
