Why we like it

Surface Psycho pairs non-destructive NURBS surface design with two-way CAD interchange, including direct editing access to imported .STEP shapes rather than dead geometry. It's still in Alpha, so expect instabilities, breaking changes, and modifier incompatibilities when mixing versions—worth keeping in mind for production work.

What is Surface Psycho?

Surface Psycho is a NURBS editor for Blender aimed at creative surface design. Built on a growing set of GeometryNodes modifiers, it enables non-destructive NURBS modeling with real-time editing, letting you trim, project, interpolate, and connect surfaces and curves with continuity control.

The add-on handles CAD interchange in both directions. You can export to .STEP and export any 2D shape as .SVG, while its importer is close to full STEP/IGES support and gives direct editing access to imported .STEP shapes. It ships as an asset library of GeometryNodes modifiers and STEP shapes, a CAD file importer and exporter, and a set of buttons under the N panel (Item > SurfacePsycho).

Anything made with it stays strictly Blender-vanilla, so files can be shared or reopened without the add-on installed. Surface Psycho is currently in Alpha, runs on Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), and Linux under Blender 5.1 and newer, and is released under the GNU GPL v3.0 or later.

Who is Surface Psycho best for?

Surface Psycho is best for blender users doing NURBS surface design who also need STEP and SVG CAD import and export.

How much does Surface Psycho cost?

Surface Psycho is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

What Blender version does Surface Psycho need?

Surface Psycho is compatible with Blender 5.1 and newer, so older releases aren't supported. It runs on Windows, macOS (both Intel and Apple Silicon), and Linux. Because the add-on relies on GeometryNodes modifiers, staying on a supported Blender build matters, and note that mixing add-on versions can cause modifier incompatibilities since the project is still in Alpha. For current requirements and setup steps, check the developer's wiki linked from the product page.

Do I need Surface Psycho installed to open files made with it?

Surface Psycho produces strictly Blender-vanilla results, so the add-on isn't required to share or reopen your files. It's only needed for CAD import and export and for a better editing experience. That means a project can be opened on a Blender install without the add-on, though the dedicated NURBS editing tools won't be available there. This keeps your work portable across Blender installations regardless of whether Surface Psycho is present.

What CAD formats can Surface Psycho import and export?

Surface Psycho exports to .STEP for CAD workflows and can export any 2D shape to .SVG. On the import side, it's close to complete STEP/IGES support, and importing a .STEP file gives you direct editing access to the shapes rather than static geometry. These capabilities come through a CAD file importer and exporter alongside an asset library of GeometryNodes modifiers and STEP shapes. See the developer's wiki for details on the import and export workflow.

What license is Surface Psycho released under?

Surface Psycho is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. It's listed as free here in the catalog; for current licensing and any donation options, check the developer's page. The add-on requests file permissions in order to import and export CAD files. For the full terms and the latest details, refer to the license and documentation linked from the developer's page.
