Why we like it

Ucupaint sits at rank 15 on the blender_extensions library, making it one of the more popular texture add-ons there. It earns its place for handling layer-based texturing entirely within a single connectable node group.

What is Ucupaint?

Ucupaint is a Blender add-on that manages texture layers for the Eevee and Cycles renderers. It has been in development for years and fits into a usual shader nodes workflow, with all of its nodes contained inside a single node group that can connect to any other nodes.

You can stack images, vertex attributes, generated textures and other types into layers and masks, then add or remove channels as needed. Modifiers such as a color ramp or math operation handle quick adjustments, and it works well with multiple objects sharing the same material. Ucupaint supports decals, loads images from the asset or file browser, and detects UDIM automatically based on UV islands. It can bake final channel images for exporters, bake AO, multires and other object's normals, and pack results into a single image using a custom bake target for ORM or DirectX normal maps. A dedicated alpha channel, realtime and vector displacement, drivers and keyframes on most inputs, and a preview mode round out the feature set.

Ucupaint is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer and is licensed under GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.

Who is Ucupaint best for?

Ucupaint is best for blender artists who paint and manage texture layers for Eevee and Cycles and want to bake channels for export.

How much does Ucupaint cost?

Ucupaint is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Ucupaint work with Blender 4.2 LTS?

Ucupaint lists compatibility with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer. It is also compatible with older Blender versions going back to 2.76, but for versions earlier than 4.2 the developer recommends the GitHub build so you also get access to the auto-update feature. If you are on a current LTS or later release, the extension version works directly. For older setups, check the developer's page to grab the GitHub version instead.

How do I install Ucupaint in Blender?

Ucupaint can be added by dragging and dropping it into Blender, or by downloading it and installing from disk. Once installed, you access it in two places: the View 3D sidebar under Ucupaint, and the Shader Editor sidebar under Ucupaint. For Blender versions earlier than 4.2, the developer suggests using the GitHub version so you also get the auto-update feature. Documentation is available on the developer's wiki to help you get started.

Is Ucupaint free to use?

Ucupaint is listed as free here and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. The developer also offers a Ucupaint Plus version of the add-on and accepts sponsorship to support ongoing development. For current licensing terms and how to obtain the Plus version, check the developer's page. The standard add-on can be downloaded and installed directly into Blender.

What permissions does Ucupaint request?

Ucupaint requests filesystem access, which it uses for loading and saving images. This permission covers reading images you bring in from the asset browser or file browser and writing out baked channel results. If you bake final channel images or pack results into a custom bake target for ORM or DirectX normal maps, the add-on needs this file access to save those files to disk.
