Why we like it

Earns its place in the ScriptSpot library for consolidating instance, class, name, and bitmap-based selection with property editing into a single 3ds Max script.

What is Universal Select By?

Universal Select By is a script for 3ds Max that selects objects according to six types. Its Instance mode targets instanced objects, instanced materials, instanced modifiers, similar objects, and objects sharing a wire color. Beyond instances, it selects by Objects, Materials, Maps, Modifiers, Layers, and Properties, using filters by class, by name, or by bitmap name.

Selection by Objects includes a face-count option: typing a number selects objects with more faces than that number, appending = matches an exact count, and appending < matches fewer. Selecting by Properties targets objects whose default property was changed. In Material and Map modes, the [R] button offers options to Remove, Replace, Replace with Sub, Replace As Sub, and Replace And Keep Subs. The script also includes a Graph function and a Maps [M] function for distributing values, plus renaming with prefixes and suffixes.

Version 3.6 starts in Blank mode, searches bitmaps by name with extension, and adds I-Transform to select objects by transform and local size. The script detects the Slate and Compact Material Editors.

Frequently asked questions

How does Universal Select By select objects by face count?

Universal Select By offers a face-count option in its Objects selection mode. Type a number of faces into the text field and press the Select button to select objects with more faces than that number. Append = to the number for an exact face count, or append < to select objects with fewer faces. All three comparisons use the same text field, and the number you type sets the threshold for the selection.

What do the five [R] button options do in Material and Map modes?

Universal Select By provides five options under the [R] button in Material and Map modes. Remove completely removes the material or map from the scene. Replace swaps it for another material or map. Replace with Sub replaces it with one of its own sub materials or maps. Replace As Sub replaces it with another and uses it as a sub. Replace And Keep Subs replaces it with another material or map while keeping its subs as subs of the new one.

How does selecting by Properties work in Universal Select By?

Universal Select By selects by Properties only when the default property has been changed. For example, checking Renderable and pressing the Search button selects all objects that have that property turned off. This targets objects that differ from their default state rather than every object carrying the property. The Property Editor includes a search field and supports a range of property classes, such as float, integer, angle, boolean, material, texturemap, bitmap, filename, color, and transform.

Is Universal Select By free, and where do I get it?

Universal Select By is listed as free in this catalog. The script is available from the developer's Gumroad page at obaidaviz.gumroad.com, where you can find the current version and licensing details. This entry covers version 3.6, updated on 2024-06-19, which starts in Blank mode, searches bitmaps by name with extension, and adds I-Transform selection by transform and local size. Check the developer's page for the latest release and any changes to distribution.
