Viewport Navigation Display earns its place in the Blender extensions library for turning the TOP orthographic view into an interactive control surface for other viewports, with a clear camera frustum representation.
Viewport Navigation Display adds an interactive overlay to Blender's TOP orthographic view, drawing a camera-style icon that represents another 3D viewport. The overlay uses converging lines to show the actual field of view based on the viewport's lens settings, and it reflects the real camera position rather than just the target point. A trapezoid shape represents the camera frustum, a detached arrow points in the view direction, a semi-transparent fill keeps the scene visible, and dark edges keep the shape clear.
The overlay is interactive. Alt + Drag moves the other viewport's position on the XY plane, Shift + Alt + Drag rotates the viewport around its own axis, and Ctrl + Alt + Drag adjusts its Z position. As you drag the camera icon toward the viewport edges, the TOP view automatically zooms out to keep it visible, while smart scaling maintains an appropriate overlay size with min/max limits. Changes sync between both viewports in real time.
You can adjust the scale and color of the camera overlay. The panel is available from a camera icon in the 3D Viewport header, visible only in TOP view, or from the View tab in the sidebar. The extension requires Blender 4.2.0 or later.
Viewport Navigation Display is best for blender users working with split windows and a TOP orthographic view who want to visualize and control other 3D viewports.
Viewport Navigation Display is completely free to download and use.
Viewport Navigation Display requires Blender 4.2.0 or later, and its compatibility is listed as Blender 4.2 LTS and newer. If you are running a version below 4.2, you will need to update Blender before installing the extension. The current release is version 1.2.1, which added Ctrl+Alt+Drag (Cmd+Alt on macOS) for Z position movement and a fix for real-time viewport sync. Check the developer's page for the latest version and any further compatibility updates.
Viewport Navigation Display is distributed as an extension package (.zip). Download the .zip, then in Blender open Edit > Preferences > Add-ons > Install, select the downloaded file, and enable the "Viewport Navigation Display" addon. Once enabled, split your Blender window to have two 3D viewports and set one to TOP orthographic view using Numpad 7. You can then activate it from the camera icon in the 3D Viewport header, which is only visible in TOP view, or from the View tab under the Viewport Navigation panel in the sidebar.
Viewport Navigation Display maps manipulation to modifier-key drags on the camera overlay. Alt + Left-click Drag moves the other viewport's position on the XY plane, Shift + Alt + Left-click Drag rotates the viewport around its own axis rather than orbiting, and Ctrl + Alt + Left-click Drag adjusts the height, or Z position. You can cancel an operation with Esc or a right-click. A Z Move Precision slider under the View tab lets you set the step size for Z movement. Changes are reflected in both viewports in real time.
Viewport Navigation Display is listed as free in this catalog and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later (GPL-3.0-or-later). The extension states that it does not require any special permissions. For the most current licensing details and to download the latest package, refer to the developer's page. The listed release is version 1.2.1, published in December 2025 with a later update, and the download size is small at around 43 KB.
