Why we like it

Anim Reviewer stands out in the blender_extensions library because it keeps review overrides — resolution, frame range and output path — separate from your scene settings while still layering burn-in metadata onto the exported video.

What is Anim Reviewer?

Anim Reviewer is a Blender add-on from FhyTan that builds on Blender's native playblast, aimed at animation review. With an active camera in the scene, you open the Anim Reviewer panel in the 3D Viewport N-panel and click Run Anim Review to generate a preview video of the current scene.

You can choose among H.264, H.265, MPEG-4 and AV1 codecs and output audio alongside the video. Playblast-specific settings for resolution, frame range and output location take effect only during review, leaving your scene untouched. Burn-in metadata overlays place custom information such as scene details, timestamps and frame numbers in any of six positions, with control over fonts, colors, sizes and margins. Preset panels and importable or exportable settings files support sharing across a team.

Anim Reviewer requires Blender 4.2.0 or higher and FFmpeg for video processing and compositing; on Windows the developer suggests UniGetUI to install FFmpeg. It is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.

Who is Anim Reviewer best for?

Anim Reviewer is best for animators generating playblast preview videos in Blender and layering burn-in review information onto the exported clips.

How much does Anim Reviewer cost?

Anim Reviewer is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

What Blender versions does Anim Reviewer support?

Anim Reviewer supports Blender 4.2.0 or higher, and its listed compatibility is Blender 4.2 LTS and newer. The add-on lives in the 3D Viewport, where it appears under the N-panel in the Tool tab as Anim Reviewer. To produce a playblast you need an active camera in the scene, then you open the panel and click Run Anim Review to start the review. It is provided under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.

Does Anim Reviewer require FFmpeg?

Anim Reviewer requires FFmpeg to be installed on your computer, since it relies on FFmpeg for video processing and compositing to work around limitations in the Blender Python API. If you are on Windows, the developer recommends UniGetUI as a quick way to install FFmpeg. Because the video processing depends on it, FFmpeg needs to be in place before you generate your first review video with the add-on.

What codecs and audio options does Anim Reviewer offer?

Anim Reviewer supports multiple video codec formats, specifically H.264, H.265, MPEG-4 and AV1, and it can output audio synchronously with the video. It also lets you modify video parameters such as resolution, frame range and output location; those changes apply only during the playblast and do not affect your scene settings. This means you can tailor a review clip without altering the project's underlying render configuration.

What's new in Anim Reviewer 1.1.0?

Anim Reviewer 1.1.0 adds {camera_sensor_width} and {camera_sensor_height} metadata variables for burn-in text, plus support for {bpy.xxx} RNA data path expressions, such as referencing an object's location. This version also adds validation for burn-in text placeholders: invalid or non-existent variables now show an inline error in the UI panel and fall back to an empty string during render and preview. It was published November 11th, 2025.

Is Anim Reviewer free to install?

Anim Reviewer is listed as free here in our catalog, and it is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. For the most current licensing terms and any usage details, check the developer's page. The add-on can be installed from Blender by dragging and dropping it, or by downloading it and installing from disk through Blender's extension preferences.
