Stands out in the superhive library as a focused fix for a single friction point: it removes the repeated button press Blender needs to reveal a selection in the Outliner, and it carries a 5-star rating from 61 reviews.
Auto-Highlight In Outliner grew out of a request from a member of the Blender community. Blender already includes a button to expand the Outliner to the selected object, but that takes an extra press each time. This addon automates the step: whenever you select an object in the 3D Viewport, the Outliner expands to show it, which helps when navigating large scenes with many objects.
Activation happens through the Outliner's Filters dropdown, where toggling 'Auto-Highlight' switches the feature on. A second toggle, 'Collapse Other Collection', then appears; enabling it collapses every collection except the one holding the selected object. Multiple Outliners and Outliners in separate windows are supported, and the addon works for artists who prefer right-click select as well as left-click.
Version 3.3 enhanced expansion of parented objects, added a default state for new scenes, and introduced an option to display the actual object rather than its grayed-out parented entry. It also brings experimental support for expanding bones in pose mode. The addon holds a 5-star rating from 61 reviews.
Auto-Highlight In Outliner is best for blender users navigating large scenes with many objects who want the Outliner to follow their 3D Viewport selection.
Auto-Highlight In Outliner is completely free to download and use.
Auto-Highlight In Outliner installs like a standard Blender addon. Download it as a zip file, then in Blender open Edit > Preferences > Add-ons and click the Install button in the top right corner of the window. Navigate to the zip, select it, and choose Install Add-on. Finally, enable the addon by checking the box next to its name in the Add-ons list. Once enabled, you activate the feature itself from the Outliner rather than the preferences window.
Auto-Highlight In Outliner is switched on from inside the Outliner, not the preferences panel. After enabling the addon, open the Outliner's Filters dropdown and toggle on the 'Auto-Highlight' option. Once that is active, a second toggle named 'Collapse Other Collection' appears; turning it on collapses every collection except the one containing the selected object. From then on, selecting an object in the 3D Viewport expands the Outliner to show it.
Auto-Highlight In Outliner supports both selection styles. Users who prefer right-click select are fully supported alongside those using left-click, a change introduced in version 2.0. The addon also works across multiple Outliners and Outliners placed in separate windows, so the expansion follows your selection regardless of which selection method or Outliner layout you use. Version 2.0 also fixed an issue where clicking in the Outliner triggered an unwanted jump to focus on the object.
Auto-Highlight In Outliner is listed as free in this catalog. For current licensing, bundle options, or any promotional pricing, check the developer's page directly, since terms and offers can change over time. The addon is distributed by Amandeep, who also provides a Discord server and an email address for feedback and questions if you run into issues or want to request features.
