Bam Blender Automat was built by a Lead Technical Material Artist at Kitbash3D to ease the move from Maya's material workflows to Blender, and it's free and open-source under GPL-3.0.
Bam Blender Automat, also known as BAM, is a Blender add-on for batch setup and updating of materials. It creates new materials or updates existing ones directly from a texture folder, with support for subfolders, custom suffixes, color spaces, presets, OpenGL and DirectX normals, and channel selection for packed textures. It reuses existing texture data-blocks instead of producing duplicates, and materials are identified by the presence of a BaseColor texture.
Custom presets let you package maps such as ARM by choosing a color channel for each texture. A suffix system handles multiple suffixes like _basecolor and _albedo with automatic upper and lower case recognition, and color space can be set per texture relative to its suffix, then applied to every texture file in the scene. Material creation and update are selective, with prompts for new materials, labels for existing ones, and Check All, Uncheck All and Invert filters.
The built-in Material Manager covers create, delete, replace, assign, select and analyze, including selecting objects or faces by material. It also offers mass cleanup of unused material slots and materials, duplicate fixing with reassignment, and texture updates with optional synchronization. The add-on is free and open-source under the GPL-3.0 license.
Bam Blender Automat is best for artists building large material libraries or handling many objects and materials in Blender, especially those creating maps in Substance Designer for large projects.
Bam Blender Automat is completely free to download and use.
Bam Blender Automat is listed as free here, and it's open-source under the GPL-3.0 license. The listing carries a symbolic price whose proceeds go directly to the Blender Development Fund, with the author stating they receive no payment from it. For the current license terms and any download details, check the developer's page, since terms can change over time between releases and different store listings.
Bam Blender Automat runs its material setup inside Blender, and the developer recommends using Cycles mode when you need to create or update hundreds of materials at once. The documentation and FAQ also address Blender freezing during heavy batch operations, so working in Cycles for large jobs is the suggested approach. For smaller sets of materials this guidance matters less, but it becomes relevant when processing large texture libraries in a single pass.
Bam Blender Automat identifies materials by the presence of a BaseColor texture and reads your texture folder using a suffix system in the form of suffix, image RGB channel and color space. It supports multiple suffixes such as _basecolor and _albedo, and recognizes upper and lower case automatically. Subfolders are supported, and color space can be set per texture relative to its suffix, then applied across all texture files in the scene.
Bam Blender Automat includes a Material Manager for creating, deleting, replacing, assigning, selecting and analyzing materials. You can select all objects or faces by material, replace one material with another across objects and faces, and run mass cleanup of unused material slots and unused materials on non-hidden objects. It can fix duplicate materials with reassignment, indicate which materials are present on a selection, and update or synchronize textures for selected objects.
