Why we like it

Comparable earns its place in the Blender extensions library as a small, focused Python add-on that reduces a repetitive visibility-toggling task to a single button, with an option to affect render visibility too.

What is Comparable?

Comparable is a Blender add-on for switching between two similar objects or collections while modelling or sculpting. When you duplicate an object as a backup and continue working, comparing the new version against the old one usually means repeatedly hiding one and showing the other. Comparable handles that toggle from a single button.

Using it is straightforward: open the sidebar, click Comparable, select two different objects or collections, and press the switch button. The button only becomes functional once two different objects or collections are selected. A reset button sets both selections back to visible, without accounting for their visibility prior to the comparison. An Affect render option extends the switch and reset behaviour to render visibility, taking effect after you enable it and press switch.

The add-on adds a sidebar panel whose category you can change to any existing or custom category through preferences. It is written entirely in Python and released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.

Who is Comparable best for?

Comparable is best for blender artists modelling or sculpting who keep a backup version and want to switch between two objects or collections without repeatedly toggling visibility by hand.

How much does Comparable cost?

Comparable is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Comparable work with Blender 4.2 LTS?

Comparable lists compatibility with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer on the Blender Extension Platform. The developer also notes release-page builds packaged for earlier Blender versions: a 2.8x archive for Blender 2.8 up to 2.93, and a 3.0x archive for Blender 3.0 up to 4.1. The 4.2x version complies with the new Blender extension guideline. These compatibility results are based on the developer's limited testing, so check the developer's page for the build matching your Blender version before installing.

How do I install Comparable in Blender?

Comparable can be added by dragging and dropping it into Blender, or by downloading the archive and using Install from Disk in Blender's preferences. You can get it from the Blender Extension Platform or from the project's release page on GitHub. Once installed, open the sidebar and click Comparable to reach the panel, then select two different objects or collections to activate the switch and reset buttons. The extension does not require special permissions.

Why is Comparable's switch button not working?

Comparable requires two different objects or collections to be selected before its buttons become functional. The switch button toggles visibility between the two selections, and the reset button restores both to visible; neither works until two different items are selected. If you also want to affect render visibility, enable the Affect render option first, then press the switch button, since that option only takes effect after it is enabled and you press switch.

Is Comparable free to use?

Comparable is listed as free here and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. It is available through the Blender Extension Platform and the developer's GitHub release page. For current licensing terms, source code and the latest builds, refer to the developer's page. The add-on is written entirely in Python and requires no special permissions, keeping the package small at just a few kilobytes.
