Why we like it

Connecter bridges Blender with the standalone Connecter DAM, handling append, link, and save operations while generating custom previews using the Cycles and EEVEE renderers.

What is Connecter?

Connecter is a standalone digital asset management application from DesignConnected that works with all kinds of assets and integrates with various software solutions. Its Blender add-on facilitates appending and linking objects, materials, and collections, and lets you save assets from Blender back to Connecter while generating custom previews using the Cycles and EEVEE renderers.

With the add-on activated, dragging a .blend asset from Connecter into Blender's viewport adds 'Link & Place' and 'Append & Place' options. From there you can add objects along with their materials, apply a material from the asset to an object in the scene, or select and place collections. These customized options are exclusive to .blend assets and do not support formats like .FBX or .OBJ. You can also save collections from the Outliner as .blend files, use 'Add Current File' to save all assets in the current project, save selected objects as individual or grouped files, and save materials with their own previews as a gallery in Connecter.

Version 0.6.20 separates Object and Material libraries, adds a Populate mode with free, 45°, and 90° rotation, aligns objects to surface normals, and packs all external references within the .blend asset.

Who is Connecter best for?

Connecter is best for appending and linking .blend objects, materials, and collections between Blender and the standalone Connecter digital asset management software.

How much does Connecter cost?

Connecter is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Connecter work with Blender 4.2?

Connecter is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so recent Blender releases are supported. It works as a companion to the standalone Connecter digital asset management software, and once the add-on is activated you can drag .blend assets from Connecter into Blender's viewport to append or link them. If you're running an older Blender version, update to 4.2 LTS or later before installing so the append and linking options behave as documented on the developer's page.

What platforms does Connecter support?

Connecter lists Windows and Arm as its supported platforms, so users on those systems can install the add-on. It pairs with the standalone Connecter application, which holds the asset library while the Blender add-on manages appending, linking, and saving assets between the two. If you're on a different platform, check the developer's page at designconnected.com/connecter for the latest platform details before building your asset workflow around the add-on.

Can Connecter import .FBX or .OBJ assets into Blender?

Connecter's customized append and linking options currently work only with .blend assets and do not support other formats like .FBX or .OBJ. When you drag a .blend asset from Connecter into the viewport, you get 'Link & Place' and 'Append & Place' options for adding objects with their materials, applying a material to a scene object, or placing collections. For non-.blend formats, those specific placement options aren't available through the add-on.

How do I install Connecter in Blender?

Connecter can be added to Blender by dragging and dropping it into the application, or by downloading the add-on and installing it from disk. Once activated, dragging a .blend asset from Connecter into Blender's viewport surfaces the 'Link & Place' and 'Append & Place' options. The extension requests file permission to import and export .blend files from and to disk, which supports saving assets from Blender back into the Connecter library.

Is Connecter free to use?

Connecter is listed as free here in our catalog, and the add-on is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. For current licensing of the standalone Connecter digital asset management software and any add-on details, check the developer's page at designconnected.com/connecter. That's the best source for up-to-date terms, since the standalone application may have its own arrangements separate from the Blender add-on.
