Dynamic Render Border earns a spot in the blender_extensions library for a focused job: shrinking the render region to just the objects that matter. It's rated 4.0 across two reviews, and reviewers noted it works in the viewport while flagging render-time issues in some newer Blender builds, so it's worth testing in your own setup.
Dynamic Render Border is a Blender add-on from tobiaskummer that automatically adjusts the render border to fit around selected objects or objects within specified collections. The goal is to render only the necessary parts of a scene, which is useful for optimizing render times, especially during animations or when focusing on specific elements.
You control it from a tab named "DynBorder" in the 3D Viewport sidebar. Add individual mesh objects through the Object List, or point it at collections, which pulls in all mesh objects inside them and their sub-collections. A padding slider adds space around the calculated border, and the border updates automatically as you change frames when the feature is enabled. An "Update Border Now" button forces an immediate refresh, and the functionality can be toggled on or off.
The add-on needs an active camera to work correctly and only considers mesh objects that are visible in both the viewport and the render. If no valid targets are found or they move off-screen, it disables the render border automatically. It is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer and distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.
Dynamic Render Border is best for focusing renders on specific, changing parts of a scene, particularly during animations.
Dynamic Render Border is completely free to download and use.
Dynamic Render Border lists compatibility with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so current LTS and later releases are covered. The add-on is at version 1.0.1, updated in June 2025. Reviewers have reported that it works in the viewport but ran into render-time problems in some later builds, one noting it didn't update dynamically when rendering animations in Blender 5.0.1, and another seeing crashes or no effect when rendering with Cycles in Blender 4.5.1. It's worth testing against your specific Blender version and render engine before relying on it in production.
Dynamic Render Border requires an active camera in the scene to function correctly, since the render border is calculated relative to the camera view. If no valid targets are found or the target objects fall off-screen, the add-on automatically disables the render border. It also only considers mesh objects, and those objects must be visible in both the viewport and the render to be included in the bounding box calculation. Set up your camera and confirm your targets are on-screen before rendering to get the expected framing.
Dynamic Render Border adds its controls to a tab named "DynBorder" in the 3D Viewport's sidebar. Press N to open the sidebar if it isn't already visible, then select the DynBorder tab. From there you can enable the dynamic border, add selected mesh objects to the object list, pick collections to include, adjust the padding slider, and trigger a manual refresh with "Update Border Now". Installation is handled through the Blender Extensions platform, either by dragging the add-on into Blender or installing the downloaded file from disk.
Dynamic Render Border currently only considers mesh objects when calculating the bounding box for the render border. Those objects must also be visible in both the viewport and the render to be included. You can target individual mesh objects through the Object List, or point the add-on at collections through the Collection List, in which case all mesh objects inside those collections and their sub-collections are considered. Non-mesh object types such as curves, empties, or lights won't contribute to the calculated border.
Dynamic Render Border is listed as free here and is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. You can download it from the Blender Extensions platform or from the developer's GitHub page, and it requires no special permissions in Blender according to its extension listing. Version 1.0.1 was published in June 2025. For the most current licensing terms and any updates, check the developer's page directly before use.
