Why we like it

EditorBar addresses a specific gap: Blender's docked Outliner and Properties editors have no built-in collapse toggle. It's scoped deliberately to default layouts and the 3D Viewport, so anyone on custom or heavily modified workspaces should review the developer's notes before relying on it.

What is EditorBar?

EditorBar is a Blender add-on that turns the default Outliner and Properties editors into a sidebar you can quickly collapse and expand. Those editors are docked on the right in Blender's default configurations, and the add-on adds a toggle to hide or show them. It currently operates in 3D Viewport areas.

There are three ways to trigger the toggle: an entry at the bottom of the 3D Viewport menu, a button in the N panel's View menu, and the keyboard shortcut Alt/Opt + Shift + N. The shortcut can be reassigned in Edit > Preferences > Keymap, and default position settings live in Edit > Preferences > Add-ons. You can also flip the sidebar between the left and right side using the shortcut or the N-panel button.

EditorBar is built and tested for Blender's default workspace presets, including Layout, Sculpting and Modeling, where the Outliner and Properties editors sit on the right. It does not yet reliably work in the Shading, Animation, Compositing, Geo Nodes, or Scripting workspaces, with updates for those layouts planned. Custom or heavily modified setups may behave unpredictably.

Who is EditorBar best for?

EditorBar is best for blender artists working in default workspace presets who want to collapse and expand the Outliner and Properties editors from the 3D Viewport.

How much does EditorBar cost?

Frequently asked questions

Does EditorBar work with Blender 4.2?

EditorBar is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, and was developed and tested mostly in Blender 4.5. The developer notes that bugfixes were created for versions 4.2 through 4.4, which should work but have not been extensively tested. If you run one of those earlier versions, the add-on is expected to function, though reporting any issues you encounter on the developer's page helps improve coverage. For the smoothest experience, a recent 4.x release aligns with where most of the testing has taken place.

How do I install EditorBar?

EditorBar can be installed two ways. You can add it directly from the official Blender extensions repository, or download the release ZIP from the developer's GitHub page for Blender 4.2 and up. For the manual route, open Blender, go to Edit > Preferences > Get Extensions, click the dropdown arrow next to Get Extensions, choose Install from Disk, select the downloaded editorbar.zip, then enable EditorBar in the extensions list. Both approaches leave you with the same add-on ready to toggle the sidebar.

How do I change EditorBar's keyboard shortcut?

EditorBar ships with the shortcut Alt/Opt + Shift + N, which echoes Blender's own N panel shortcut. To change it, open Edit > Preferences > Keymap and search for editorbar.toggle_sidebar, also listed as Toggle EditorBar Sidebar. Click the keymap entry and assign any key combination you prefer. You can also trigger the same toggle from a button in the N panel's View menu or from an entry at the bottom of the 3D Viewport menu, so the keyboard shortcut is one of several ways to collapse and expand the sidebar.

Does EditorBar work in the Shading or Compositing workspaces?

EditorBar is optimized for Blender's default workspace presets where the Outliner and Properties editors sit on the right side, such as Layout, Sculpting and Modeling. It does not yet reliably work in the Shading, Animation, Compositing, Geo Nodes, or Scripting default workspaces, and the developer has planned updates for those layouts. It's also not recommended for custom or heavily modified workspaces with non-standard editor splits, unusual panel placements, or floating editors, where the sidebar toggle may behave unpredictably.

Is EditorBar free to use?

EditorBar is listed here as free and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. The extension does not require special permissions. For current licensing details and any terms, check the developer's page. It's distributed through the official Blender extensions repository as well as the developer's GitHub, so you can grab it from either source. The version listed here is 0.4.8, which you can confirm against the latest release before downloading.
