Vertex Color Selector earns its place in the Blender Extensions library for doing one focused job — selecting faces by vertex color — without extra complexity around it.
Vertex Color Selector is a face-selection add-on for Blender that works with vertex colors painted onto a mesh. Its Find Colors button loads a list of every vertex color used on the current mesh, and Select This Color highlights all faces painted with the color you choose. A Pick Vertex Color button adds an eyedropper you click directly on a face.
The intended workflow runs in Vertex Paint mode: paint your mesh faces with vertex colors for an ID map, click Find Colors, then click Select This Color for the color you want. Holding Shift while clicking Select This Color lets you build a selection from multiple colors at once.
The tool works with solid color fills and does not account for vertex color gradients, so ID maps should use flat fills. New color attributes need a Face Corner domain and Byte Color data type; a built-in Fix button or the Convert Color Attribute option can correct attributes that do not match. It runs on Blender 4.2 LTS and newer under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.
Vertex Color Selector is best for blender artists selecting mesh faces by vertex color when painting ID maps in Vertex Paint mode.
Vertex Color Selector is completely free to download and use.
Vertex Color Selector is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so recent stable releases can run it. You add it by dragging and dropping the add-on into Blender, or by downloading it and installing from disk through the Extensions preferences. The extension reports no special permissions, so setup stays limited to installing and enabling it. If you are on an older Blender build, you would need to update to at least 4.2 LTS before the tool becomes available.
Vertex Color Selector expects a color attribute set to a Face Corner domain with a Byte Color data type. If you add a new color attribute that does not match those settings, you can click the Fix button inside the add-on, or use Convert Color Attribute from the Color Attribute menu to correct it. Getting this right lets the tool read the vertex colors on your mesh so that Find Colors can list them and Select This Color can pick out the matching faces.
Vertex Color Selector does not account for vertex color gradients, so it is built around solid color fills. When you paint an ID map with vertex colors, use flat, solid fills rather than blended areas. With solid fills in place, the Find Colors button can gather each distinct color, and Select This Color can grab every face carrying that exact color. Blended or gradient colors fall outside what the tool is designed to match, so plan your ID map with solid fills from the start.
Vertex Color Selector lets you select more than one color at a time by holding Shift while clicking the Select This Color button in the color list. On its own, Select This Color grabs all faces painted with a single chosen color, while the Pick Vertex Color button lets you sample a color straight from a face with an eyedropper. Combining Shift with entries in the list builds a multi-color selection while you work in Vertex Paint mode.
Vertex Color Selector is listed as free here, and it is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. For current terms, download options and any licensing details, check the developer's page. The add-on reports no special permissions and is a small download, so there is little to weigh up before trying it in a Blender 4.2 LTS or newer setup where you paint vertex colors for ID maps.
