Why we like it

A free beta from abhi.01, Frame Flow currently targets the Shader Node Editor, with Geometry nodes and Compositor support noted as planned. A stable release is announced for Blender Market and Gumroad.

What is Frame Flow Beta?

Frame Flow Beta extends Blender's Node Editor with a smarter way to document node setups. It lets you add annotated frames that group and label nodes, write multiline comments to describe setups, and drop in emoji and Unicode characters to make notes expressive. Styling is customizable, letting you adjust font, size, color, and padding, and frames can be added instantly with shortcuts.

The add-on works inside the Shader Node Editor, with support for Geometry nodes and the Compositor noted as coming later. Each frame creates a data block that stores its text and formatting, and these are saved automatically. Deleting a frame node removes its associated data block. The built-in text editor includes emoji and Unicode search, category browsing, and bold and italic formatting buttons, while frame name, label, color, and font size are edited through Blender's standard Node sidebar.

Currently in free beta, Frame Flow is inspired by the comment frame workflow in Adobe Substance Designer. A demo video under five minutes long covering the add-on's functionality is available on YouTube. The developer welcomes comments and criticism during the beta phase.

Who is Frame Flow Beta best for?

Frame Flow Beta is best for blender users working with complex node setups, tutorials, and procedural systems who want to annotate and organize their Shader Node Editor work.

How much does Frame Flow Beta cost?

Frequently asked questions

Does Frame Flow Beta work with Blender 4.3?

Frame Flow Beta is listed as compatible with Blender 4.3 and newer. You can install it directly inside Blender through Edit → Preferences → Get Extensions by searching for "Frame Flow," which appears as "Frame Flow Beta." Alternatively, you can drag and drop the add-on from the Blender extensions website, or download the .zip and use Install from Disk under Edit → Preferences → Add-ons, then enable it from the list. The developer notes you can remove any previous FrameFlow version before installing a new one.

Which Blender node editors does Frame Flow Beta support?

Frame Flow Beta currently supports the Shader Node Editor. To use it, open a Shader Node Editor, press N, and go to the FrameFlow tab, where you can create frames and comments with the Create Frame button or generate a frame around selected nodes with the Insert Frame button. Support for Geometry nodes and the Compositor is noted as coming in a future update, so those editors are not yet covered by the add-on.

How does Frame Flow Beta store frame text and formatting?

Frame Flow Beta stores each frame's text and formatting in a data block. Every frame created through the add-on produces a data block whose name ends with _USER_Data_Block, which you can rename if you wish. All data blocks are saved automatically, so there is no need to save them manually. When you delete a frame node, its associated data block is deleted automatically along with it, keeping the file tidy.

Is Frame Flow Beta free?

Frame Flow Beta is listed as free here and is currently offered as a free beta. It is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. The developer has stated that a stable version will be released on Blender Market and Gumroad. For current licensing and any updates on the stable release, check the developer's page linked on this listing.
