Why we like it

Stands out in the Superhive library for turning retopology into a drawing task built on Grease Pencil. Note that it's supported up to Blender 4.0, with no planned future updates at this time.

What is G-Mesh - Grease Pencil Retopology?

Retopology is essential but disliked by many 3D artists, and tweaking vertices, edges and faces for long stretches can wear anyone down. G-Mesh works differently inside Blender: rather than placing geometry by hand, you draw retopology naturally and intuitively with Blender's Grease Pencil.

The mechanic is simple. G-Mesh adds a point each time your Grease Pencil strokes cross each other, then connects the points with edges and fills them with faces. Version 2.0 reworked mesh generation to fix exponential processing time and other unnecessary calculations, added Auto Generation that progressively builds the mesh for a non-destructive workflow, and introduced threading so the mesh can generate without freezing Blender. Cyclic strokes that previously failed to close edges were also fixed.

The add-on is supported up to Blender 4.0 and lists compatibility with versions 3.2 through 4.0, under a GPL license. There are no plans for future updates at this time. A demo video is available.

Who is G-Mesh - Grease Pencil Retopology best for?

G-Mesh - Grease Pencil Retopology is best for 3D artists doing retopology in Blender who prefer drawing topology with Grease Pencil over manually editing vertices, edges and faces.

How much does G-Mesh - Grease Pencil Retopology cost?

G-Mesh - Grease Pencil Retopology is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Which Blender versions does G-Mesh support?

G-Mesh - Grease Pencil Retopology lists compatibility with Blender 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 and 4.0, and the add-on is supported up to Blender 4.0. There are no plans for future updates at this time, so releases beyond 4.0 aren't covered by the developer. If you're working within that version range you should be set; if you're on a later build, check the developer's page for the current status before relying on it in production work.

How does G-Mesh turn Grease Pencil strokes into geometry?

G-Mesh - Grease Pencil Retopology adds a point each time your Grease Pencil strokes cross one another. Those points are then connected with edges and filled with faces, which is how the retopologized mesh takes shape. This lets you draw topology naturally and intuitively rather than placing individual vertices by hand. Version 2.0 also added Auto Generation, which progressively generates the mesh for a non-destructive workflow, so geometry builds up as you draw across the surface.

Does G-Mesh freeze Blender while it generates the mesh?

G-Mesh - Grease Pencil Retopology uses threading so the mesh can generate without freezing Blender, a change introduced in version 2.0. The 2.2 changelog also notes fixed compatibility with other threaded add-ons. Earlier work optimized mesh generation by fixing exponential processing time and removing unnecessary calculations. Together these changes are aimed at keeping Blender responsive while the tool builds geometry from your Grease Pencil strokes, including through the non-destructive Auto Generation process.

Is G-Mesh free, and what license does it use?

G-Mesh - Grease Pencil Retopology is listed as free in this catalog, and it's distributed under a GPL license. Licensing and pricing can change over time, so check the developer's page for the current terms before you download. The add-on has been published for almost three years and carries a small number of user ratings, which you can review on the developer's page alongside the full documentation for setup and usage details.
