Gamepad Control stands out in the blender_extensions library for bringing gamepad-driven viewport navigation to Blender, with configurable modes you can export and share. It is an early beta, currently tested on Windows with a PS5 controller.
Gamepad Control is a Blender add-on from Frank-Moelendoerp that lets you use a game controller or gamepad to navigate and control the 3D viewport in real time. It provides camera controls, view manipulation, and customizable gamepad modes for working in Blender. Control modes cover orbit, pan, dolly, and direct view switching, and you can create multiple modes with different control schemes.
Button and axis mappings are configurable, and you can switch modes using gamepad buttons or trigger a temporary mode switch while holding a button. A visual overlay shows the current controller mappings in the viewport, while a header indicator reflects the active mode. Settings can be exported and imported for sharing configurations or backing them up. Mouse emulation is available on Windows, with macOS and Linux support on the roadmap.
Configuration is handled in Preferences > Input > Gamepad, where you can set modes, mappings, sensitivity, and display preferences. The add-on has been tested on Windows-x64 with a PS5 controller and works with PlayStation, Xbox, or compatible controllers.
Gamepad Control is best for blender users who want to navigate and control the 3D viewport with a PlayStation, Xbox, or compatible game controller.
Gamepad Control is completely free to download and use.
Gamepad Control is listed as compatible with Blender 5.0 and newer, and the developer notes it requires Blender 5.0 or later. Configuration happens through Edit > Preferences > Input, where a Gamepad section lets you set up modes, button and axis mappings, sensitivity, and display preferences. Once enabled, a gamepad icon appears in the 3D Viewport header so you can reach the mode controls. If you are on an earlier Blender release, check the developer's GitHub page before installing to confirm current version support.
Gamepad Control works with PlayStation, Xbox, or compatible game controllers connected to your computer. The add-on has currently been tested on Windows-x64 with a PS5 controller, so behaviour with other devices may vary. Once your controller is connected, you can map buttons and axes, create multiple control modes, and switch between them using gamepad buttons. A visual overlay in the viewport shows the current controller mappings, and a header indicator reflects the active mode. Check the developer's GitHub page for the latest device notes.
Gamepad Control lists Windows, macOS Intel, and Linux among its supported platforms, with separate downloads for each. Its mouse emulation feature is currently Windows only, and the developer notes macOS and Linux support for that feature is on the roadmap. Core viewport navigation covers orbit, pan, dolly, zoom, and direct view switching to top, bottom, front, back, left, right, camera, and perspective. The add-on has been tested on Windows-x64 with a PS5 controller, so check the developer's GitHub page for platform-specific details.
Gamepad Control can be installed by downloading the ZIP for your platform, then opening Blender and going to Edit > Preferences > Add-ons, clicking Install, and selecting the ZIP file before enabling it in the list. You can also drag and drop the downloaded file directly into Blender. After enabling, connect your gamepad and look for the gamepad icon in the 3D Viewport header to access mode controls and settings. Enable Show Overlay to see current controller mappings in the viewport.
Gamepad Control is listed as free here and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. That license covers how you can use, modify, and redistribute the add-on. For the current licensing terms, source code, and any updates, visit the developer's GitHub page. The add-on requests file permission so it can import and export settings and controller modes, which supports the export and import configuration feature used for sharing setups or backing them up.
