Why we like it

Isolate Select earns its place in the superhive library by porting a workflow Blender users know from Maya and 3ds Max: repeatable isolation that leaves the scene's saved display state untouched. Its display options for lights, reference images and collections make it flexible for working inside busy scenes. It is distributed under the GPL license and covers Blender 2.79 through 5.0.

What is Isolate Select?

Isolate Select recreates the isolate-select behaviour familiar from Maya and 3ds Max inside Blender. It gives the viewport a local view: an individual display state separate from an object's non-display or viewport display state. You can isolate a display temporarily without changing the display state stored on the data, which is useful when you want to edit a specific object inside a complicated scene.

The local view can be repeated any number of times, and an isolation level lets you step up or down through nested isolations. You can undo the separated display state the add-on creates, and return to the global view when the isolation level is low enough. When isolating, the add-on can always include lights and objects from a specified collection.

Display options keep useful context visible. Display Lights keeps lights shown and lets you work in Render View on Eevee without changing the appearance, Display Image empty keeps a reference image displayed, and Display Collection keeps a chosen collection visible along with its child collections. In mesh edit mode, Hide unselected mesh hides non-selected areas so only the fully selected part is shown.

Frequently asked questions

Does Isolate Select work with Blender 2.79?

Isolate Select supports Blender versions 2.79 through 5.0. On Blender 2.79 the feature is available through add-on version 1.3.2, while Blender 2.8 and later use the current build. The default isolate shortcut also differs by version: it is mapped to Q on Blender 2.79, and to Shift+Q on Blender 2.8 and up. If you are on an older release, check the developer's page and documentation to make sure you download the matching add-on version for your setup.

What keyboard shortcuts does Isolate Select use?

Isolate Select ships with default keymaps for its main actions. Shift+Q triggers Isolate Select, Ctrl+Shift+Alt+W raises the isolation level, and Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Q lowers it. On Blender 2.79 the isolate shortcut is Q instead of Shift+Q. Raising and lowering the isolation level lets you repeat local view any number of times, and you can undo the separated display state or return to the global view when the isolation level is low enough. Full details are on the developer's documentation page.

Can Isolate Select keep lights visible while isolating objects?

Isolate Select includes a Display Lights option that keeps lights displayed while other objects are isolated. This lets you work in Render View on Eevee without changing the appearance of your scene. Alongside it, the add-on can keep a reference image empty displayed and keep objects from a specified collection visible, including objects in child collections. These display options mean an isolated view can still show the elements you need for context rather than hiding everything except the selection.

Is Isolate Select free to download?

Isolate Select is listed as free here, and it is distributed under the GPL license. For current licensing terms, download options and any pricing set by the developer, visit Bookyakuno's page and the linked documentation. The add-on covers Blender 2.79 through 5.0, so confirm you are getting the version that matches your Blender release when you download it. A demo video is also available for reference.
