KeyShifter earns its place in the ScriptSpot library as a focused animation utility from effect artist Masaya Sugimura, built to shift transform keys by per-object values like distance, color, or name.
KeyShifter is a script for 3ds Max, written by effect artist Masaya Sugimura. It shifts the transform keys of selected objects, applying an offset derived from a numeric value: each object's distance, its color, or its name. The results shown for the script come from selected objects that were set with the same animation, with the shift applied per object.
The script works when objects have a hierarchical structure, and inclined objects present no problem. Since the version 1.22 update, it also handles position controllers other than the positionXYZ controller, rather than being limited to positionXYZ.
Listed at version 3.6 in the ScriptSpot library, KeyShifter is a compact utility for offsetting animation across several selected objects at once. Masaya Sugimura keeps a script reel on his blog, and a demo video is available.
KeyShifter is best for 3ds Max artists who need to offset transform keys across multiple selected objects using each object's distance, color, or name.
KeyShifter is completely free to download and use.
KeyShifter handles objects that have a hierarchical structure, so the transform-key shift still applies when objects are linked into a hierarchy. The developer also notes that inclined objects present no problem for the script. This suits setups where selected objects share the same animation and each object's keys need to be offset by its own value rather than shifted uniformly. If your scene relies on nested or linked objects, KeyShifter is designed to account for that hierarchy while it shifts the transform keys.
KeyShifter shifts the transform keys of selected objects using a numeric value taken from each object, and that value can be the object's distance, its color, or its name. Because the value is read per object, objects that share the same animation can each receive a different offset. The example results the developer shows come from selected objects set with the same animation. So the shift amount is not a single fixed number but is derived from the property you choose for each object.
KeyShifter supports position controllers other than the positionXYZ controller, a capability added in the version 1.22 update. Before that release the script was limited to the positionXYZ controller. The current listing shows version 3.6, so the broader controller support remains part of the tool. If the selected objects in your scene use a position controller other than positionXYZ, KeyShifter is meant to handle them while it shifts the transform keys based on distance, color, or name.
KeyShifter is listed as free in this catalog. For current licensing terms and any conditions that apply, check the developer's page, which is Masaya Sugimura's blog and hosts his script reel as the reference for the tool. A demo video is also available. Licensing details can change over time, so the developer's page is the best place to confirm how KeyShifter may be used before you bring it into a production setup.
