Why we like it

Retarget earns its place in the Blender extensions library by folding Expy Kit's retargeting and Rigify conversion together with Animaide's animation tools into a single Blender 5 add-on, with credit also to Pullusb for the Surface Rig feature.

What is Retarget?

Retarget is a Blender add-on by KBS-DEV that handles animation retargeting between character rigs. Since version 2.0.0 it has been a fork of Expy Kit and Animaide, bringing both projects' tools together. It includes presets for Mixamo, Unreal, Vroid, MMD, Daz and Auto Rig Pro, and you can add your own preset from the N-panel.

Beyond retargeting, Retarget converts humanoid rigs to Rigify through Bind to Active Metarig and Extract Metarig, and its Rigify Game Friendly option renames bones into a single hierarchy for game engines. Binding tools cover bind to active armature, constraint apply/disable/remove, select constrained controls, align bones and mirror support. Animation features carry over Animaide's CurveTools, AnimOffset and KeyManager, alongside Bake Constrained Actions, Add Root Bone, Transfer Root Motion and FBX import.

A Surface Rig option adds a rig on the surface of a mesh or grease pencil, and the Action Manager organizes actions in blend files and the Asset Library across five modes. Retarget requires Blender 5.0 or newer and is released under the GNU GPL v3.0 or later.

Who is Retarget best for?

Retarget is best for blender riggers and animators transferring animation between character rigs, converting characters to Rigify, and preparing armatures for game engines.

How much does Retarget cost?

Retarget is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Retarget work with Blender 4.x?

Retarget works only with Blender 5.0 and higher; earlier versions aren't supported. The add-on became a fork of Expy Kit and Animaide from version 2.0.0 onward, and the current release is version 5.1.1, updated December 19th, 2025. If you're on Blender 4.x or below, you'll need to upgrade before installing. It's distributed through the Blender extensions platform, where you can drag and drop the add-on into Blender or install it from disk.

Do I need the Rigify add-on to use Retarget's Extract Metarig?

Retarget's Extract Metarig function converts a humanoid rig to a Rigify metarig, and it requires the Rigify add-on to be activated in Blender first. Retarget also handles binding any rig to an active metarig and includes Rigify Game Friendly renaming, which converts Rigify armatures to a single hierarchy for game engines. If Extract Metarig doesn't run, check that Rigify is enabled in your Blender add-on preferences before trying again.

What rigs does Retarget include presets for?

Retarget ships with retargeting presets for Mixamo, Unreal, Vroid, MMD, Daz and Auto Rig Pro, meant to make the retargeting task easier. If you work with a skeleton that isn't covered, you can add your own preset from the N-panel. Note that Retarget does not support Expy Kit presets, so if you're migrating from Expy Kit you'll need to update the preset file's skeleton line from the expykit_retarget property to the retarget_retarget property.

Where do I find Retarget's tools in Blender?

Retarget's tools live in the context menu, accessible by right-clicking in both Object and Pose mode. The Action Manager, which manages actions in blend files and the Asset Library across five modes, is also reached from the context menu. Once the add-on is installed and enabled in Blender, right-click in the viewport to open the menu and access the binding, conversion and animation tools.

Is Retarget free to use?

Retarget is listed as free in this catalog. It's released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later and distributed through the Blender extensions platform. For current licensing terms, source code and issue tracking, check the developer's page. The add-on is developed by KBS-DEV as a fork of Expy Kit and Animaide, with additional credit to Pullusb for the Surface Rig feature.
