Why we like it

Earns its place in the blender_extensions library for handling file versioning and publishing directly from the 3D Viewport.

What is Save with Versioning?

Save with Versioning is a Blender add-on by DShot92 that saves your files with automatic versioning and publishing. When you save, it increments the version number in the file name, so a file moves from scene_v001.blend to scene_v002.blend and onward. The increment and publish buttons sit in two places: the View3D header beside the viewport render modes, and a panel in the sidebar under Tool.

The publish function saves the current file as the published version, which stays the newest, up-to-date file. You can link assets to that published file while continuing to work on separate incremental versions, and any files linked to the published version update automatically when you publish. The version and publish suffixes are customizable in the add-on preferences.

A file list in the sidebar shows all versioned and published files in the current directory, and it auto-refreshes when you load or save. You can open any version directly from the list or jump to the current file's directory. Version 2.1.0 added a customizable panel location, with Item, Tool, View, and Edit categories.

Frequently asked questions

Does Save with Versioning work with Blender 4.2?

Save with Versioning is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so recent Blender releases are covered. It's distributed as a Blender extension and can be added by dragging and dropping it into Blender, or by downloading and installing it from disk. The current version is 2.1.0. Once installed, the increment and publish buttons appear in the View3D header beside the viewport render modes and in a panel in the sidebar under Tool.

How do I change where the Save with Versioning panel appears?

Save with Versioning lets you set the panel's location in the 3D Viewport sidebar through the add-on preferences. You can choose between Item, Tool, View, and Edit categories, a customizable panel location that arrived in version 2.1.0. The same preferences let you customize the version suffix used for incremented numbers, such as _v001, and the publish suffix used for the published file, such as _published. Adjust the Panel Category setting to move the panel where you want it.

How does publishing work in Save with Versioning?

Save with Versioning saves the current file as a published version that always stays the newest, up-to-date file. You can link assets to that published file while you keep working on separate incremental versions. When you publish, any files linked to the published version automatically receive the updated version. The file naming follows a pattern like scene_published.blend for the published file, alongside incremental files such as scene_v001.blend and branch files like scene_v002_001.blend.

Is Save with Versioning free, and what license does it use?

Save with Versioning is listed as free here in the catalog, and it's released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. For the current licensing terms and the latest release, check the developer's page on GitHub. The add-on requests permission to save .blend files, which it needs to write the incremented and published versions. The most recent version is 2.1.0, and the source is available in the developer's repository.
