Why we like it

Smart Measure earns its place in the scriptspot library by consolidating distance, angle, length, area and object measurements into one script, with automatic measuring on selection and history and clipboard handling built in.

What is Smart Measure?

Smart Measure is a script for 3ds Max built to replace the program's default Measure Tools. It covers common dimensions in the coordinate system: distance, total length, area, angle, and the dimensions of objects.

The script offers several measurement modes. Measure Distance reads the distance between two points or two objects. Measure Angle returns the angle created by the picked points. Measure Length gives the total length of a polyline created by the picked points. Measure Area calculates the area created by the picked points, and Measure Object reports the dimensions of the picked objects.

Three automation features round out the toolset. Live Measure measures automatically when you select an object. Auto Memory saves measured values into a history, and Auto Clipboard copies the measured value to the clipboard when a command finishes. Smart Measure works with 3ds Max 2016 and later.

Who is Smart Measure best for?

Smart Measure is best for 3ds Max users who want to measure distance, angle, length, area and object dimensions in place of the default Measure Tools.

How much does Smart Measure cost?

Smart Measure is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Smart Measure work with 3ds Max 2016?

Smart Measure is listed as compatible with 3ds Max 2016 and later, so 2016 is the minimum supported release. The script is designed to stand in for the default Measure Tools in 3ds Max, handling distance, angle, total length, area, and object dimensions in the coordinate system. If you run a newer version, the 2016+ range indicates it should apply there as well. For the exact list of supported builds, check the developer's page before installing.

Does Smart Measure measure objects automatically when I select them?

Smart Measure includes a Live Measure feature that measures automatically when you select an object, so you do not have to trigger the command manually each time. Alongside it, the Measure Object mode reports the dimensions of picked objects, and the other modes cover distance, angle, total length, and area from picked points. Together these give you a running readout as you work in 3ds Max rather than a single one-off measurement.

Does Smart Measure save or copy the values it measures?

Smart Measure handles measured values two ways. Auto Memory automatically saves measured values into a history, so earlier readings are retained rather than lost. Auto Clipboard automatically copies the measured value to the clipboard when a command finishes, which lets you paste it straight into another field or document. These run as part of the measurement workflow inside 3ds Max, on top of the distance, angle, length, area, and object measurement modes the script provides.

Is Smart Measure free to download?

Smart Measure is listed as free in this catalog, so you can add it to your 3ds Max setup without a purchase here. Licensing and pricing can change over time, and the developer maintains the authoritative details, so check the developer's page at d95design.com for the current terms before you rely on it. The script itself replaces the default Measure Tools and requires 3ds Max 2016 or later to run.
