Why we like it

TWA earns its place in the superhive library by automating a fiddly part of biped animation, translating a walk across space without foot slide, across the Rigify, BlenRig, and Auto-Rig Pro rigs.

What is Translational Walk Aid?

Translational Walk Aid, or TWA, is a Blender addon from Levonotion Studios for translating a biped character walk animation forward. It moves a character's foot forward while the center of mass automatically shifts into the appropriate position, forward or backward depending on the direction of the step, based on the stride length of the animated walk. Much of this happens with a single button click.

You can input the number of steps forward or backward and change the keyframe interval, with keyframes added automatically. There is no foot slide, and the addon can be used for walk or run animation, working with an existing walk cycle or from scratch. It is compatible with three popular rigging systems: Rigify, BlenRig, and Auto-Rig Pro. The current version sets keyframes on the center of mass or torso and the right and left foot controls, with more controls planned for future updates.

TWA lives in Pose Mode under the sidebar's TWA tab. After picking your rig and creating a contact pose to define the stride length, the available buttons translate the character across 3D space. Version 3.0 adds options to go up and down stairs.

Frequently asked questions

What Blender versions does Translational Walk Aid support?

Translational Walk Aid supports Blender versions 3.4 through 5.0, covering a wide range of recent releases. The addon is distributed under the GPL license. Beyond the Blender version, it also depends on which rigging system you use, since it works alongside three of them. If you are running a build outside the 3.4 to 5.0 range, check the developer's page on Levonotion Studios for current compatibility details before you install it.

Which rigging systems does Translational Walk Aid work with?

Translational Walk Aid is compatible with three popular rigging systems: Rigify, BlenRig, and Auto-Rig Pro. The current version sets and manipulates keyframes on the center of mass or torso and the right and left foot controls, with more controls planned for future updates. Whichever of the three rigs your biped character is built on, TWA can translate it forward or backward across 3D space. Check the developer's page to confirm the setup steps for your chosen rig.

Where do I find Translational Walk Aid after installing it?

Translational Walk Aid appears under 3D View > Pose Mode > Sidebar > TWA after installation, and the TWA tab only shows while you are in Pose mode. Open the tab, click Get Started, select your biped character rig, and create a contact pose by separating the feet to define the stride length. Set a keyframe after the contact pose, then click any of the available buttons to translate your character forward or backward.

Is Translational Walk Aid free?

Translational Walk Aid is listed as free in this catalog, and it ships under the GPL license. Because licensing and any pricing can change over time, check the developer's page on Levonotion Studios for the current terms before downloading. A bundle covering all three rigging systems is offered alongside individual versions for Rigify, BlenRig, and Auto-Rig Pro, so review the options there to match your rig.
