Viewport Scale Bar earns its place in the blender_extensions library by bringing a map-style scale bar into Blender's orthographic viewport as a lightweight overlay of under 10 KB.
Viewport Scale Bar is a Blender add-on from Renee-13 that displays a cartographic scale bar as a 2D overlay in the 3D viewport. The concept comes from maps: rather than reaching for the measurement tool or annotations, you get a quick estimate of the size of an object or structure while working in orthographic view.
The scale bar is shown only in orthographic view. In perspective view it is not displayed, because there cannot be a uniform scale across the viewport.
Version 1.2.1 added Top-center and Bottom-center positions and made the scale length adjustable between 200 and 1000 pixels, with intermediate values now shown. The add-on is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, requires no special permissions, and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.
Viewport Scale Bar is best for blender artists who want a quick size reference in the orthographic viewport without switching to the measurement tool or adding annotations.
Viewport Scale Bar is completely free to download and use.
Viewport Scale Bar is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so it runs on the current long-term support release and later builds. You can add it by dragging and dropping the extension into Blender, or by downloading the file and installing it from disk. The add-on requires no special permissions to run and is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. If you are on an earlier Blender version, you would need to update before installing it.
Viewport Scale Bar displays its cartographic scale bar only in orthographic view. In perspective view the bar is not shown, because there cannot be a uniform scale across the viewport. In orthographic mode, the overlay is intended to provide a quick estimate of the size of an object or structure without reaching for the measurement tool or annotations. The scale concept is drawn from maps, applying that cartographic approach directly inside the Blender 3D viewport.
Viewport Scale Bar can be placed using position options that include Top-center and Bottom-center, both added in version 1.2.1. Its scale length can be adjusted between 200 and 1000 pixels, and intermediate values are now displayed as well. The add-on renders the scale bar as a 2D overlay in the 3D viewport, giving you a cartographic reference for judging object size while you work in orthographic view.
Viewport Scale Bar is listed as free here in the catalog, and it is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. For current licensing details, check the developer's page on GitHub. The add-on requires no special permissions to run. It was published on June 3rd, 2026, with version 1.2.1 as the listed release, and it is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer.
