Gp Select earns its place in the blender_extensions library by turning stroke selections into a wide set of layer, weight-painting, and rigging actions for Grease Pencil, with a Switch to Layer operator the developer highlights as the most useful. The developer uses it in their own work and posts video explanations of its functions.
Gp Select is a Grease Pencil add-on for Blender, built around cut-out and puppet animation to speed up rigging work, though anyone working with Grease Pencil layers can use it. The idea is simple: select the stroke you want, then press the button for the action you need. Selection happens in Edit mode, or in Sculpt mode with selection masks turned on.
The operator the developer calls the most useful, Switch to Layer, sets the active layer to the one holding the selected stroke. From there you can isolate strokes for weight painting, reorder layers, send them to the top or bottom, move layers and groups relative to a selection, and mask, hide, rename, duplicate, delete, or set opacity by selected strokes. It also includes selection by prefix, infix, suffix, and index passes, a LockedGPS system for excluding grouped layers from certain operators, mode-switching tools, and rig generation tools.
Gp Select runs on Blender 4.5 LTS and newer, currently at version 1.8.0, and is listed here as free. Each button carries a tool tip you can read by hovering over it.
Gp Select is best for cut-out and puppet animators rigging Grease Pencil in Blender, and other Grease Pencil artists who manage many strokes, layers, and groups.
Gp Select is completely free to download and use.
Gp Select is compatible with Blender 4.5 LTS and newer, and the current release is version 1.8.0. One thing to keep in mind: in Blender 5.0 there is a bug that drops stroke opacity below 1.0 when materials are assigned, which the developer notes can be worked around by using "Set uniform opacity" and manually setting the values to 1.0. Blender 5.1 and 5.2 are unaffected. Its operators work by selecting strokes in Edit mode, or in Sculpt mode with selection masks turned on, then pressing the button for the action you need.
Gp Select installs by dragging and dropping the downloaded add-on into Blender, or by using Blender's Install from Disk option in the extensions preferences. A stable build is also available on the Blender extensions platform, while more frequent updates come through the developer's channel, though those may have issues. The download is a small zip file at version 1.8.0. Once installed, its operators run by selecting strokes and pressing the corresponding buttons, and each button carries a tool tip you can read by hovering over it.
Gp Select is listed as free in this catalog and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. It is developed by HissatsuClaw, who maintains a stable version on the Blender extensions platform alongside a more frequently updated build. For current licensing terms and any support options, check the developer's page. Because it is GPL-licensed, you can use it under the terms of that license, so review the license text if you plan to modify or redistribute it.
Gp Select's Weight Selected operator brings the selected strokes into Weight Paint mode and isolates them from strokes that use different materials or sit on different layers. If you have a parented armature, it selects that armature too, so you can switch vertex weights by choosing different bones. Leaving Weight Paint mode unlocks your layers and materials again. It is togglable, so a single hotkey can handle both lasso selection and entering weight paint. It works best when strokes have different materials, since color attributes share one material and won't separate.
