Why we like it

Proxy Plus earns a spot in the superhive library for turning a manual, time-consuming proxy-rig process into a one-click operation while leaving the final render untouched.

What is Proxy Plus?

Proxy Plus is a Blender add-on that automates proxy creation and management to improve viewport performance and save time. Proxies work for playing proxy-based animations to accelerate viewport playback, and can stand in for real meshes to speed up physics solves for simulations.

The Generate Proxy Rig tool breaks a deforming mesh into pieces so each piece follows its bone directly instead of deforming to it, delivered as a one-click operation. For non-rigged geometry, Generate Decimated Proxy copies the selected objects, applies decimate modifiers, and renames them as proxies. In both cases the proxies are only visible in the viewport, while the render still uses the full-fidelity character.

Set Proxy assigns existing proxy objects to represent chosen objects and handles the naming convention, while Toggle Proxy switches between proxy and full-fidelity meshes. Adaptive Proxy Mode lowers viewport subdivision and multiresolution levels for deselected objects and raises selected objects to render level, optionally displaying deselected objects as wireframe or bounds. It is compatible as a Blender 4.2 extension.

Who is Proxy Plus best for?

Proxy Plus is best for blender artists working with heavy rigs, proxy-based animation playback, and physics solves for simulations who want to keep the viewport responsive without changing the final render.

How much does Proxy Plus cost?

Proxy Plus is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Generate Proxy Rig: a one-click operation that breaks a deforming mesh into pieces, each following its bone directly instead of deforming to it
  • Generate Decimated Proxy: copies selected non-rigged objects, applies decimate modifiers, and renames them as proxies
  • Set Proxy assigns existing proxy objects to represent chosen objects in the viewport and handles the naming convention
  • Toggle Proxy switches between proxy and full-fidelity meshes
  • Adaptive Proxy Mode lowers subdivision and multiresolution viewport levels for deselected objects, raises selected objects to render level, and optionally shows deselected objects as wireframe or bounds while ignoring boolean meshes
  • Proxies are visible only in the viewport, so the render still uses the full-fidelity character
  • Compatible as a Blender 4.2 extension

Frequently asked questions

Does Proxy Plus work with Blender 4.2?

Proxy Plus is compatible as a Blender 4.2 extension, a change introduced in the 0.4.13 update. A later 0.4.14 update also fixed an importing issue in 4.2 when reloading add-ons and added a minor optimization for the optimize vertex groups operator. For the current supported version range and any newer releases, check the developer's page, since the changelog is now bundled with the product downloads rather than listed publicly.

Do Proxy Plus proxies change the final render?

Proxy Plus keeps its proxies visible only in the viewport, so the render still uses your full-fidelity character. This applies both to the proxy rig, which breaks a deforming mesh into pieces that follow their bones, and to decimated proxies created from non-rigged objects. The goal is faster viewport playback and physics solves while the rendered output stays at full quality.

Can Proxy Plus use my own existing proxy objects?

Proxy Plus supports proxies you already have through the Set Proxy operator: select your proxy object or objects, run Set Proxy, and choose which object they represent in the viewport. It applies the proxy naming convention for you, and Toggle Proxy then switches between the proxy and full-fidelity meshes. The documentation tab describes the naming convention so you can use it with your own custom proxies.

Is Proxy Plus free?

Proxy Plus is listed as free in this catalog. Licensing terms can change over time, so for the current pricing and license details it is best to check the developer Spencer Magnusson's page on superhive before downloading. This catalog does not display a specific price for the add-on, and any figures you find should be confirmed at the source. If licensing has changed since this listing was compiled, the developer's page will reflect the most accurate and up-to-date terms for the Blender add-on.
